N.A.I.L. - October - Splatter & FingerFood's Theme Buffet - Autumn

Hi all!

For the N.A.I.L. prompt I had to do a splatter mani. I haven't done one in well over a year. Mostly because it's so messy, all that clean up, ugh. I think a lot of it's success is in the colours you use and the base you use it on. I used some very bold colours for my first splatter mani (in my first month of blogging), perhaps it would be more striking if I had used those colours on top of a white or black base.

To choose the colours for today's splatter mani I've incorporated the last FingerFood's Theme Buffet prompt, autumn. FFTB will continue in 2015, but for now it'll be on a break. So, let's look at my autumnal colours!

The autumnals:
  • Barry M - Gelly - Lychee
  • Catrice - LE Matchpoint - C01 Team Lucky Mustards
  • Catrice - LE Matchpoint - C03 Rockby
  • China Glaze - 1077 Call of the Wild
  • Essence - 166 Mister Rusty

Because I felt a white base would clash, I used Lychee (I still need a polish that sits in between white and Lychee), 2 coats. I added a coat of HK Girl before I started splattering, just because I'm a star in ruining my base before my mani is done. To start the splatter, I had taped up my nails to avoid too much clean up. I put down some paper towels on my desk, had my straws ready (one for each polish, which are in fact ordinary drinking straws cut in half) and the bottles open. Then it's just a matter of dipping your straw into the polish bottle, aim it above your nails and blow through the straw. Repeat if necessary, because most polish will land somewhere next to your nail, on the paper towel, on the China Glaze bottle etc. The order my bottle shot is in is also the order I used the polishes in for splattering. If I thought a nail was lacking some of the colours I would splatter them again. Then you wait until it all dries, and it does not dry smooth, even with one coat of HK Girl I can feel some unevenness, but I don't mind much.

I love the end result! I do think these colours work together well and I like that shimmer Mister Rusty brings to the splatter party. I did these nails two days ago (still wearing them) and I'm sad I'm getting tip wear... I love how irregular each nail is.

I shouldn't let all the dreaded clean up hold me back, not that there isn't any, because polish will pool in your cuticles. But I love them. Have you done a splatter mani? Let me know!

More splattering down here!

And more autumn down here!

  1. Okay, maybe just because I'm in the Halloween mood, but these totally remind me of a horror movie! LOL! I see the blood splatter, and then maybe the body was rolled in leaves. :P

    1. Tsssk, I use pretty autumn leaf colours and you think of blood and gore *chuckles*. Absolutely not intended that way, Halloween is not something Dutch people really celebrate much at all. But that reddish one does look a bit like dried blood, yes.
